Article are of two types:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indefinite Article(a, an)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Definite Article(the)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IMPORTANT RULES<\/span><\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1- An is used before a word, beginning with a vowel sound.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Incorrect: The English were a enemy of the French.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Correct: The English were an enemy of the French.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2- A is used before a word, beginning with a consonant sound.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Incorrect: An girl is waiting for me.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Correct: A girl is waiting for me.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3- <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use of A\/An<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A\/An is used before indefinite singular countable nouns.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A\/An is used before singular countable nouns which means that can be counted.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A\/An is used in exclamatory sentences. A\/An is used after \u2018what\u2019 and \u2018how\u2019.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A\/An is used in the sense of each, every and per.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A\/An is used in the original numerical sense of one.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A\/An is used in the vague sense of a certain.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A\/An is used to make a common noun of a proper noun.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A is used with the few words that denote the number of countable nouns such as <\/span><b>\u2018hundred\u2019, \u2018thousand\u2019, \u2018dozen\u2019, \u2018couple\u2019, \u2018million\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, etc.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A is used before fractions and half\/fractions.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A\/An is used when a verb is used as a noun. It takes article a\/an before it.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4- <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use of &#8216;The&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018The\u2019 is used before definite nouns that are pointed out.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a person or place is mentioned in a sentence for comparative purpose, \u2018the\u2019 comes before the proper noun.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018The\u2019 comes before the names of a few places like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018the great Britain\u2019, \u2018the Hague\u2019, etc.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u2018The\u2019 does not come with the names of states.<\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Exception*<\/strong> &#8211; \u2018the Punjab\u2019.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018The\u2019 is not used with the names of the countries, however, if Union, Kingdom, Republic, United, etc comes with the names of the countries, \u2018the\u2019 is used. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eg: The U.S.A, The French Republic, The United Kingdoms, etc.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018The\u2019 comes before the names of mountain ranges. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eg: The Himalayas, the Alps, etc.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u00a0NOTE<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; \u2018Aravali\u2019 is not a mountain range. Hence, \u2018the\u2019 doesn\u2019t come before it.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018The\u2019 doesn\u2019t come before the names of mountain peaks. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eg: Mt. Everest, Mt. Abu, etc.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018The\u2019 comes before \u2018nationality\u2019 but not with the names of any \u2018language\u2019.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eg: The English defeated the French.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Eg:The English speak English.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>The article does not come before the name of any disease.<\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Exception*<\/strong>&#8211;\u00a0 The Mumps, The Measles, The Plague, The Flu, The Rickets.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018The\u2019 comes before <\/span><b>space<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> only when it means \u2018room\u2019<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eg: He tried to park his van but space was not enough. (Incorrect)<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eg: He tried to park his van but the space was not enough. (Correct)<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018The\u2019 is used before the directions like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018the East\u2019, \u2018the West\u2019, etc.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The article does not come before <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Northern, Southern, Eastern, Western<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as they are adjectives and will not take any article unless followed by a suitable noun.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018The\u2019 is used before the names of holy books like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018The Gita\u2019, The Bible\u2019, etc.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018The\u2019 is used before the names of movements like<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2018The Quit India Movement\u2019, \u2018The Swadeshi Movement, etc.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Articles\u2019 are used before the names of posts.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u2018The\u2019 is used with the following proper nouns:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\" aria-checked=\"false\"><strong>Names of Rivers<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; The Ganga, The Ravi, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\" aria-checked=\"false\"><strong>Names of Seas<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; The Arabian sea, The Caribbean sea, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\" aria-checked=\"false\"><strong>Names of Hotels<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; The Lalit, The Taj Hotel, etc<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\" aria-checked=\"false\"><strong>Names of Planets<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; The Earth, The Venus, The Mars, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\" aria-checked=\"false\"><strong>Dates<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; 10th of June, 16th of July, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\" aria-checked=\"false\"><strong>Army\/Police<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; The Army, The police, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\" aria-checked=\"false\"><strong>Names of Trophies\/Cups<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; The World Cup, The Ranji Trophy, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\" aria-checked=\"false\"><strong>Names of Inventions<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; The Electric bulb, The telephone, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\" aria-checked=\"false\"><strong>Names of Union<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; The Sun, The Universe, The Environment, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5- With some of the phrases A\/An is used:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>In a fix, a short while ago, at a loss, take a fancy to,\u00a0 take an interest in, a pity, tell a lie, take a liking, make a noise, keep a secret, make a foot, as a rule, at a stone\u2019s throw, in a hurry, in a nutshell, etc.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eg: Twelve inches make a foot.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eg: Never tell a lie.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6- With some of the phrases A\/An is not used:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>To lose heart, to give ear, to set foot, last but not least, to catch fire, in hand, set on fire, to take heart, in danger, by mistake, at home, by bus\/car etc.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eg: Seena\u2019s house was set on fire.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eg: Ishaan goes to college by bus.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7- If <\/span><b>many\/ rather\/ quite\/ such,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> take a <\/span><b>singular noun<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after them. A\/An is used before the noun.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eg: Many a citizen would welcome such a reform.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eg: It was such a foolish decision.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8- <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Omission of A\/An<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A\/An should not be used before plural nouns.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Articles are not used before the nouns or in the sentences starting with <\/span><b>\u2018what kind of\u2019, \u2018what type of\u2019, \u2018 what variety of\u2019, \u2018what sort of\u2019, etc.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eg: What sort of a man he is! (Incorrect)<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eg: What sort of man he is! (Correct)<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A\/An is not used with uncountable nouns like <\/span><b>Advice, luggage, news, permission, progress, scenery, knowledge, wine, weather, traffic, music, information, postage, equipment, poetry, hair, business, bread, crockery, wastage, work, money, evidence, breakage, jewellery, stationery, baggage, etc.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eg: Sohan will buy a furniture today. (Incorrect)<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eg: Sohan will buy furniture today. (Correct)<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9- If an object is already known to both the speaker and the listener, <\/span><b>\u2018The\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is used before it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Incorrect: Kindly return book that I gave you.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Correct: Kindly return the book that I gave you.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10- If an article comes before a <\/span><b>singular common noun<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it represents the entire species.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eg: A dog is a faithful animal.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11- When we talk about a personality present inside a person, the article comes with the name of that personality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eg: The judge in him prevailed upon the father and he sentenced his son to death.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12- If <\/span><b>schools, colleges, temples<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are denoted in reference to their primary purpose, the article is not used.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eg: I go to temple every morning.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13- An article is used if <\/span><b>school, college, temple, etc<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> denotes a place or a building and not its primary purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eg: My house is behind a temple.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14- <\/span><b>No article<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is generally used with <\/span><b>abstract nouns<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They are uncountable nouns hence A\/An cannot be used with them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eg: Honesty is the best policy.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>NOTE<\/strong>:<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0If nouns are followed by \u2018of\u2019 an article precedes the noun.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><b>Article + Noun + of + \u2026..<\/b><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eg: The honesty of this girl is liked by all.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15- <\/span><b>\u2018The\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is often used before a <\/span><b>superlative degree<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eg: She is the most beautiful girl in the town.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eg: This is the most useful book needed for competitive exams.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">16- <\/span><b>\u2018The\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is used before the <\/span><b>comparative degree<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0when two comparative degrees are shown to be directly or inversely proportional to each other.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eg: The higher you rise, the greater is the fall.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">17- If <\/span><b>one out of two<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is chosen, a comparative degree is used, preceded by <\/span><b>\u2018the\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and followed by <\/span><b>\u2018of\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eg: He is the stronger of the two wrestlers.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">18- If <\/span><b>one out of many<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is chosen, a superlative degree is used, preceded by <\/span><b>\u2018the\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and followed by <\/span><b>\u2018of\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eg: She is the best of all the players.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">19- When <\/span><b>\u2018The\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is used before adjectives like <\/span><b>honest, rich, meek, poor, etc.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It denotes the entire class and becomes a <\/span><b>plural common noun.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Such nouns take plural verbs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eg: The honest are always rewarded.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20- When any adjective or a noun qualifies as a <\/span><b>proper noun<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, article <\/span><b>\u2018the\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is used with the <\/span><b>proper noun<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eg: Ashoka, the great; Napoleon, the warrior, etc.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">21- <\/span><b>\u2018The\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is used before <\/span><b>Ordinal numbers(first, second, third, etc)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><b>Cardinal numbers(one, two, three, etc)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> do not take any article before them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eg: Chapter two of this book is very easy.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eg: The second chapter of this book is very difficult.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">22- <\/span><b>\u2018The\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is used before the adjectives <\/span><b>\u2018same\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>\u2018whole\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and after <\/span><b>\u2018all\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>\u2018both\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eg: She is the same girl that met me in the park.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eg: All the girls are dressed beautifully.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">23- If <\/span><b>so, as, too, how and quite<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are used before adjectives, A\/An is used if the noun that follows the adjective is singular.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eg: Ronit is not as big a businessman as you think.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eg: It is too heavy a box for me to carry.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">24- If an article is placed just before the <\/span><b>1st subject<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it means the <\/span><b>person\/thing is the same<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for which two nouns are used. Hence, <\/span><b>singular verbs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will be used.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eg: A white and black gown was bought by her.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">25- If an article is used before <\/span><b>every subject<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it refers to <\/span><b>different people\/things<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
